Helping to Save the Environment with Eye on Earth – FoodWatch

Today at the Eye on Earth summit in Abu Dhabi, Jacqueline McGlade, European Environment Agency (EEA) Executive Director, announced a new FoodWatch program that is part Eye on Earth network from the EEA.  The main goal of FoodWatch is to give people an opportunity to share  environmental data and local information on varieties of edible plants with some of the best ways to use energy for cooking and water for growing crops.

All of this is done primarily through the use of mapping software called ArcGIS Online that was created by Esri and hosted on the Windows Azure platform using SQL Azure as the spatial data store.

A key part of this initial FoodWatch program is the WonderBag from Natural Balances.  This is an amazing cooking bag that helps to reduce the amount of energy it takes to cook food by 30%! There are already over 150,000 bags in homes around South Africa.  You can see some map visualizations of the carbon savings and distribution here.

You can learn more about FoodWatch and the EyeOnEarth network here.
